We’re living in a time when many people are feeling increasing pressure. Whether it be financial strains, fear of terrorism, rising house prices or global warming, there’s seemingly no shortage of anxiety and fear for the future. Despite what life can throw across your path, there are always opportunities to be optimistic and positive.
Here are 4 simple tips to help you in lead a life of optimism:
Embrace an attitude of gratitude
Nothing puts things into perspective more than taking a step back from your situation and approaching it from a place of gratitude. Making the expression of thankfulness a habit in your everyday life, has the power to change your outlook, even on the worst of days. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, set your attention on the things you have been blessed with.
Be generous
“There’s no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.” – John Holmes
A natural repellent of pessimism is generosity. But not only is it good for your attitude, it’s good for your health. Many studies have shown the benefits of generosity in stress levels and blood pressure. But generosity is less about the ‘giver’ and more about the recipient, so make the choice to be intentionally selfless and contribute to someone else’s happiness though your generosity.
There are so many opportunities to give generously to organisations, charities and social enterprises that are doing meaningful work around the globe. Or maybe you want to shout someone a coffee. I’ve heard of people paying for complete stranger’s meals through the McDonald’s drive-thru or even a tank of petrol at the service station. Small gestures that can change the course of someone’s day.
Pursue passion
This will look different for everyone, but discovering and pursuing your passions is key to unleashing true joy and optimism. Following your personal and professional goals adds purpose to your life, and allows you to be more than you think you can. It will drive you to push your limits and inspire you. You will always come up with reasons as to why you can’t pursue your passion,
‘I’m too busy’
‘It doesn’t pay the bills’
‘I’m afraid I’ll fail’
Overcoming these obstacles is the real test of your passion and willingness to chase your dreams. Don’t feed the doubts, instead, smash them to pieces and be passionate about something, anything.
Surround yourself with positive people
I’m a firm believer in that whoever you surround yourself with, you’ll become. Therefore, it’s important to ensure that the key people in your life and encouraging, inspiring and positive. You’re only as good as the company you keep, so be with people to challenge you to be better and speak life and love into your world.
It’s been said that success follows the optimist. Invest time in generosity, gratitude, passion and people, and watch your life transform.
